A Large Living Laboratory
From: Columbia University | By:

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |

iosphere 2 Center in Oracle, Arizona--Columbia's "Western" campus--has become a thriving center of research and educational activity on topics ranging from biodiversity, to earth and environmental sciences, to astronomy. The Biosphere 2 Center (www.bio2.edu/index.html) website offers visitors a virtual tour of the center's massive three-acre sealed glass "laboratory," which houses habitats ranging from a coral reef to high desert. Panoramic 360-degree images from IPIX let users stand inside most of the habitats, or biomes--usually off-limits to visitors--and control where they want to look.

Guided tours take visitors through the campus of Biosphere 2.
The site has clear explanations of many of the research projects currently happening there, a calendar of events and lectures held on campus, photo galleries, and information for undergraduates interested in taking courses. There are also discussion groups and a section on the site for K-12 students, encouraging them to learn about environmental issues and the earth.
