From: Columbia University

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |
The works of the most famous female artists in post-Soviet Russia have the following characteristics in common: the prominence of self-portrait as a genre; the use of domestic objects; and ironic detachment from conventional gender roles. That is the thesis of Helena Goscilo (right), professor of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of Pittsburgh. In this talk, sponsored by the Harriman Institute at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, Goscilo looks at original paintings, installations and performances by Russia's best-known female artists. |
