radicating poverty in America is a goal for many politicians, policymakers and social service organizations. However, understanding poverty--which pervades both urban centers and rural regions and affects toddlers, teens, parents and seniors--is a complex matter. Alleviating the effects and causes of poverty requires an understanding of the different roots of poverty in the United States, the effectiveness of varied federal, state and local policies aimed at its reduction, and its physical, social, and psychological effects on urban and rural poor of diverse ages and backgrounds. |
The Joint Center for Poverty Research (http://www.jcpr.org), a partnership between the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, supports academic research that examines what it means to be poor and live in America, the causes and consequences of poverty, and the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing it. In addition to funding a broad set of research projects, the center also sponsors conferences on topics ranging from welfare reform and rural poverty to juvenile crime and welfare-to-work programs. The conferences allow a nationwide group of interdisciplinary poverty researchers to exchange ideas and analysis. |
For poverty researchers and general audiences who want to learn more about poverty in America, the JCPR website publishes hundreds of working papers, policy briefs, newsletter articles and conference papers. The site also provides current poverty statistics and recommended reading lists by center affiliates. In addition, an easily navigable poverty information section answers basic questions about poverty statistics, programs and misconceptions. Readers can submit their own questions to add to the list. |
