EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |
The year 2001 marks the centenary of the death of Queen Victoria and the 150th anniversary of the Great Exhibition of 1851. These anniversaries provide an opportunity to reflect on the Victorian era and its impact on the century that followed.
With this lecture, David Cannadine, director of the Institute of Historical Research, inaugurated the 'Locating the Victorians' conference held at the Science Museum in London. Cannadine discusses twentieth-century British politics in the light of the Victorian agenda and achievements, considering how far Britain has been concerned to preserve or demolish the legacy of such an eventful era. |
