Dusty Bob and the Spectacle of the Street
From: Science Museum | By: Brian Maidment

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION | Street life, a theme that was widely covered by caricature artists, was fascinating to the Victorians. Dustmen made a surprisingly frequent appearance in these depictions of urban spectacle. Easily recognisable in their working clothes they offered the viewer a unique perspective and understanding of the scene. In this feature, based on a talk given at the "Locating the Victorians" conference in July 2001, Brian Maidment, professor of English at the University of Salford describes, with fantastic images, the role of Dusty Bob, observer of the spectacle of the street.

Brian Maidment discusses and illustrates the caricature of Victorian dustmen.
