EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |
When software development exceeded 40 percent of its information technology (IT) activities, Garban-Intercapital--a leading money and securities broker--knew it was time to recognize IT as more than just technical support. Stephen McDermott led the charge, leaving his role as CEO of the Americas at Garban to become CEO of ETC (Electronic Trading Community), a new entity focused solely on software development.
With this new post came a host of new challenges, from coordinating ETC's goals with Garban's traditional business model to shifting from management of a global financial enterprise to management of an IT community. Perhaps most daunting, McDermott faced the challenge of being "at the top, learning from the bottom"--leading a technology company without personal technical expertise.
In this segment of "Executive Focus," McDermott updates Art Langer, chair of faculty and curricular development at Columbia University's Programs in Information Technology, on his experiences in launching ETC. McDermott first discussed his new role as part of a research study conducted by Langer, to be published in the near future. |
Art Langer interviews Stephen McDermott about his transition from CEO of a financial firm to CEO of a technology company.
