EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION |
Though their careers rarely intersected, jazz legends Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington came together for Paris Blues, a film starring Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier. For the 1961 film, which was indicative of Hollywood's struggle with racial identity and the portrayal of interracial relationships, Louis Armstrong played "Wild Man Moore," and Duke Ellington (with Billy Strayhorn) wrote the original score.
At a lecture at Columbia University's Center for Jazz Studies, professor Krin Gabbard (above), author of Jammin' at the Margins, examines Armstrong's controversial film performances from 1932 through Paris Blues and explores Ellington and Strayhorn's subtle yet subversive score for the film. |
Krin Gabbard discusses the participation of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington in the 1961 film Paris Blues.
