The British Library, the world's leading resource for scholarship, research and innovation, began operation in 1973 and was formed by bringing together many different library-based organizations including the library departments of the British Museum. The Library's collection, developed over 250 years, exceeds 150 million items. The principal custodian of Britain's literary heritage and one of the prime guardians of the nation's cultural resources, the Library contains three major exhibition galleries displaying a wide range of collection material, and mounts a full programme of events for all ages based on the collections and related literary themes.
